A notebook for writing sessions — Rifle Paper Co’s notebooks are lined, so they’re better suited to actual writing than sketching. I still use mine for more than words though — I glue in photos, tickets, and other little finds as I go. Shop on Amazon

Watercolor set for beginners — You don’t need professional paints to start. The Winsor & Newton Cotman travel set is affordable, beautiful, and comes in a tin you can take anywhere. Shop on Amazon

Colored pencils worth having — Tombow’s Irojiten set reads like a color dictionary: thirty wax-based pencils with poetic names instead of numbers, in a box beautiful enough to leave out on your desk. If you’re going to own nice pencils, they might as well look like it. Shop on Amazon

Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert — Gilbert’s love letter to the creative life. Short chapters, warm voice, and permission to take your creativity seriously without taking yourself too seriously. Shop on Amazon
